INDIRECT ELECTROCHEMICAL PROCESSES AT A ROTATING-DISK ELECTRODE - CATALYTIC ALKALINE CYANIDE OXIDATION

Rotating-disk-electrode polarization curves for the oxidation of cyanide on a copper oxide film at moderately alkaline pH have been fit by a reaction-plane model of the fast homogeneous reaction between cyanogen and hydroxide. The results indicate that when the ratio of bulk hydroxide concentration to that of bulk cyanide is low, the main electrode reaction product is cyanogen. This cyanogen is transported away from the electrode until it encounters hydroxide and reacts very quickly to form cyanate and cyanide. Electrode kinetic parameters for the heterogeneous cyanogen formation reaction on the copper oxide film have been estimated.
