OPTICAL NONLINEARITY IN A NEMATIC LIQUID-CRYSTAL USING SURFACE PLASMON-POLARITONS

摘要
We report the observation of a strong thermally-induced optical nonlinearity in a system comprised of a nematic liquid crystal placed in close proximity to a silver film into which radiation may be coupled to excite the surface plasmon-polariton mode. The nonlinearity is due to heating of the liquid crystal by the radiation power being adsorbed by the silver film. The heating is strong enough to warm a thin layer of liquid crystal, close to the interface, above the nematic-isotropic transition temperature. Experiments to warm the sample and thus reduce the incident intensity required to observe strongly nonlinearity have been undertaken and preliminary results confirm this interpretation.
