PERMANGANATE MALONIC-ACID INITIATED POLYMERIZATION OF ACRYLAMIDE AND METHACRYLAMIDE

摘要
The kinetics of aqueous polymerization of acrylamide and methyacrylamide using the redox pair potassium permanganate and malonic acid was studied. It was found that the order of the polymerization reaction is 0.5 with respect to permanganate and malonic acid, respectively, and 1.0 with respect to the concentration of the monomers. Polymer samples were prepared under different conditions, and their viscosity average molecular weights were determined. A plausible mechanism for the explanation of the experimental results is proposed.
