FAR-INFRARED REFLECTION SPECTRA OF SILLENITE CRYSTALS AND THEIR SOLID-SOLUTIONS

The infrared reflection spectra of sillenite type crystals of Bi12MO20 (M: Si, Ge, Ti, Fe) are measured in the whole range of the first-order phonon frequencies and analyzed using the Kramers-Kronig relations. Two-mode behavior is determined for several characteristic modes of Bi12Si1-xTixO20 and Bi12Ge1-xTixO20 solid solutions. The experimental data are discussed in the model of vibrating structural units. The vibration frequencies and the force constants for tetrahedra MO, are calculated. The calculation results are in good agreement with experimental data for the modes with two-mode behavior.
