ELECTROCHEMICAL-BEHAVIOR OF AL-BRASS IN NATURAL SEAWATER

摘要
It is known that Al-brass alloy (76 Cu, 22 Zn, 2 Al) is susceptible to corrosion in natural seawater [1,2]. However, the corrosion susceptibility of this alloy is higher when the natural seawater is polluted with various chemical elements. In fact, Al-brass was found more electrochemically active in sulphide polluted seawater [3-7] than in pure natural seawater, especially under flow conditions. On the other hand, Al-brass was found electrochemically stable in natural seawater with a safe level of chlorine present in a stagnant condition [7,8]. Otherwise, the alloy suffers an impingement attack when the velocity of the flow exceeds the critical flow condition of 3 ms [8].
