PIGMENT IDENTIFICATION ON MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPTS BY RAMAN MICROSCOPY

摘要
The pigments - particularly the inorganic ones - used to illuminate medieval manuscripts are surveyed and the possible methods for their identification briefly summarised. Raman microscopy is now recognized to be the most effective technique for this purpose, and a range of recent applications is surveyed. Raman microscopy is ideal for identifying the components (even down to grain sizes of similar to 1 mu m) of pigment mixtures and it is thus a very important technique at the Arts/Science borderline in art conservation.
