AERO-ACOUSTICS OF TURBULENT SHEAR FLOWS

This article is primarily concerned with the generation of sound by high-Reynolds-number turbulent shear flows. The use of linearized theory to calculate turbulent flows or, better yet, changes in turbulent flows is a branch of turbulence theory now known as 'rapid-distortion theory'. Most rapid-distortion calculations are based on the inviscid equations, an application that is justified when both the mean flow and turbulence Reynolds numbers are large.
