EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION AND MODELING OF DAMAGE EVOLUTION PROPAGATION IN CARBON EPOXY LAMINATED COMPOSITES

Experimental and theoretical analyses to characterize the damage propagation of carbon/epoxy composite laminates with varying layups, notch/crack geometries and crack lengths are presented. Different damage processes were examined, using Moiré interferometry, acoustic emission and infrared thermography tests. A damage propagation model, based on the equivalent crack propagation concept, is proposed to predict the various stages of damage evolution/propagation and the fracture strength. The predictions agree well with the experimental results of earlier investigations. © 1990.
