An organic-inorganic protonic polymer electrolyte (ormolyte-organically modified silane electolyte) to be used as membrane in direct methanol fuel cells is presented. The synthesis, prepared by the sol-gel method, is based on several organically modified alkoxy silanes, chosen according to the particular properties needed in the final product. The membrane thus prepared exhibits a protonic conductivity of about 10-2 OMEGA--1 cm-1 at room temperature.
