Detailed observation and analysis of exoelectron emission from velocity-selected Cl2 molecules impinging on a K surface imply a reaction pathway, where surface harpooning, surface-modified electron affinities, molecular dissociation dynamics, and Auger neutralization are key ingredients. To account for the data, a model proposed by Nørskov, Newns, and Lundqvist is extended to include the nonadiabatic electron affinity of Cl2 and an explicit treatment of the Cl2 dissociation trajectories for different incident orientations. © 1995 The American Physical Society.
