DECOMPOSITION OF CHINA REGIONAL INEQUALITIES

This paper attempts to decompose China′s regional inequalities into their intra-provincial, inter-provincial, intra-rural, intra-urban, and rural-urban components. Per capita gross value of industrial and agricultural outputs, infant mortality rates, and illiteracy and semi-illiteracy rates for all the counties and cities except those in Xizang for the year 1982 are used to measure the different aspects of regional inequalities. The empirical findings shed light on the outcome of China′s regional development strategy pursued during the pre-reform period. © 1993 Academic Press, Inc.
