5,10,15,20-meso-tetra(p-sulfonatophenyl)-porphyrin is a highly sensitive indicator for the determination of Cd(II) ions in alkaline solutions. After immobilizing this dye in a poly(vinychloride) membrane, its application as a chromoionophore in combination with tridodecylmethylammonium-chloride as co-ionophore is investigated. The response time of this sensor is 20 min after contact with Cd(II) solutions and is reversible. The detection limit is 1.9 x 10(-5) mol/l (2.1 mg/l).
