THERMAL-STABILITY OF AMORPHOUS FE1-XTIX ALLOYS PRODUCED BY VAPOR QUENCHING

Amorphous Fe//1// minus //xTi//x alloys with x equals 0. 2-0. 75 have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer effect measurements. The amorphous phase is thermally the most stable for x equals 0. 3-0. 4 where there is the Laves phase, TiFe//2 (C14), in the equilibrium phase diagram. After annealing at 670 K for few hours, the amorphous phase is retained for 0. 25 less than x less than 0. 45, while it transforms to an alpha Fe-type b. c. c. phase for x less than 0. 25, to a B2-type b. c. c. phase for 0. 5 less than x less than 0. 6, to an intermediate phase of Ti//2Fe (E9//3) for 0. 6 less than x less than 0. 7 and to a beta Ti-type b. c. c. phase for 0. 7 less than x less than 0. 75, respectively. After being annealed above 870 K, the amorphous phase with x equals 0. 3-0. 4 transforms to the Laves phase.
