INITIAL TRANSIENT GROWTH-INHIBITION IN MAIZE COLEOPTILES FOLLOWING AUXIN APPLICATION

摘要
Coleoptile segments from Zea mays L. were equilibrated in a pH 4.5 buffer that induces a moderate steady state elongation. Adding 10 muM 3-indoleacetic acid caused a significant transient inhibition of elongation rate before <<normal>> growth stimulation occurred after 17 min. This initial negative response was specific: it was not seen with 50 muM benzoic acid, while the auxins 1-naphthylacetic acid and 4-Cl-indoleacetic acid provoked a transient response similar to indoleacetic acid. 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid did not induce an initial growth inhibition.
