MULTIPLE REDOX REACTIONS AND ELECTROCHROMISM OF BILAYER-MEMBRANES OF PRUSSIAN BLUE AND RU(BPY)3(2+)

Redox reactions and electrochromism of bilayer membranes of Prussian blue (PB) and Nafion containing Ru(bpy)3(2+) coated on ITO electrodes were studied electrochemically as well as spectrophotometrically during scanning from -0.5 V to 1.5 V (saturated calomel electrode). For the ITO/PB/Nafion[Ru(bpy)3(2+)] bilayer system. the cyclic voltammogram as well as the visible spectra exhibited additive patterns of PB and Ru(bpy)3(2+) depending on the applied potentials. However, for the ITO/Nafion[Ru(bpy)3(2+)]/PB bilayer system, PB was not reduced on scanning negatively, but on scanning positively it was oxidized via the oxidation of the ruthenium complex. Both the systems exhibited multielectrochromism.
