ISOTOPE EFFECT IN A SUPERCONDUCTOR WITH STRONG ANHARMONICITY

The influence of double-well type lattice anharmonicity on the superconducting transition temperature and its isotope effect is investigated within the framework of the Eliashberg theory for strongly coupled superconductors. It is demonstrated that anharmonicity can greatly modify the isotope effect; in particular, anomalously large (alpha greater-than-or-equal-to 0.5) and very small (alpha almost-equal-to 0.1) values of the isotope exponent alpha are obtained in the strong and weak coupling limits, respectively. The validity of the two-level description is checked as a reasonable approximation for a wide range of potential parameters.
