COMPARISONS OF ISOZYME DIVERSITY IN 3 RARE SPECIES OF COREOPSIS (ASTERACEAE)

Genetic diversity in three rare and/or endemic species of Coreopsis was studied using enzyme electrophoresis. Tetraploid C. integrifolia has considerably higher genetic diversity than the two diploid species C. pulchra and C. rosea. Genetic differentiation among populations of C. integrifolia and C. rosea is greater than for populations of C. pulchra. Coreopsis integrifolia has higher genetic diversity, C. rosea has about average, and C. pulchra has lower diversity than reported for many rare species studied allozymically. Differences among species of Coreopsis in total diversities and levels of population differentiation indicate that the genetic structure of populations of rare plants, even for congeneric species, may vary considerably.
