SURFACE CHARACTERIZATION BY X-RAY PHOTOELECTRON-SPECTROSCOPY AND FOURIER-TRANSFORM INFRARED-SPECTROSCOPY OF CALCIUM HYDROXYLAPATITE COATED WITH SILICATE IONS

Colloidal calcium hydroxylapatite (HAP) coated with silicate ions was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Coating with silicate ions was performed by two methods: synthesis using a Pyrex vessel and treatment with silicate solutions. The IR spectra of the HAP coated with silicate ions had 3740-, 3730-, and 3720-cm-1 bands in addition to the 3682-, 3673-, and 3659-cm-1 bands already assigned to the surface P-OH groups. The former three bands are assigned to the surface Si-OH groups. The XPS spectra of HAP coated with silicate ions revealed the 102.6- and 104.8-eV peaks, coinciding with the Si(2p) peak of sodium silicate and silica gels, respectively.
