A REVIEW OF VAPOR-PHASE CHROMATOGRAPHY - GAS-CHROMATOGRAPHY WITH VAPOR CARRIER GASES

摘要
This is a review of the literature concerning the applications of adsorbable vapors as carrier gases for gas-solid and gas-liquid chromatography. The effects of different vapors are discussed for many diverse systems. The prevalent effect of the vapors is enhancement of the retention of other solutes if less than a monolayer of vapor is adsorbed on a solid adsorbent. At higher surface coverages, the observed effects are diminished retention and improved peak shape for most solutes. The exact behavior of liquid systems is determined by the characteristics of the solute, vapor, and stationary liquid phases. Real and potential applications of this methodology are discussed, as well as its advantages and disadvantages. A qualitative review of the pertinent nonelectrolyte solution theories is presented.
