Unless senior management has a positive approach to controlling safety in the same way as it controls production, quality, costs and sales, then the number of accidents suffered will not be substantially reduced. This paper discusses the hazards implicit in the industrial-gases industry, its accident history with particular reference to accidents involving back injuries, and the safety programs which have enabled the industry to reduce both the number of accidents resulting in lost time and the number of lost workdays to a highly significant extent.
