DETERMINATION OF CYANIDE IN MANUFACTURED-GAS PLANT PURIFIER WASTES

Concentrations of complexed and free cyanide were determined in manufactured gas plant (MGP) purifier waste samples collected from two MGP sites in New York State. Standard additions of NaCN gave total cyanide levels of 14.3 +/- 1.0 and 23.6 +/- 3.7 mg CN g-1 DWT (oven dry weight of solids) for the two samples. Free cyanide in both samples was less than the method detection limit. Accordingly, the cyanide values cited pertain to cyanide in complexes; these complexes are expected to be largely inorganic. A second determination on Sample 2 using standard addition of complexed rather than free cyanide yielded 25.8 +/- 3.2 mg CN g-1 DWT. From these data, it appears that gas purifier wastes may be expected to contain as much as 1 to 3 percent cyanide as CN on a dry weight basis.
