While there has been considerable research activity in the maintenance treatment of recurrent affective disorders, little attention has been paid to the possible prophylactic value of psychotherapy. The use of interpersonal psychotherapy, a well-established acute treatment for depression, is considered with patients suffering from recurrent unipolar disorder. The specific application of the treatment to a population of fully remitted patients is described.
