Electricity is fundamental to the quality of modern life. Advanced technologies offer an opportunity to meet the world's energy needs while minimizing the environmental impact. To save money and ease environmental pressures, it has been found that an estimated 30 to 75% more mechanical work can be squeezed out of a kilowatt-hour of electricity. The biggest savings can be attained in a few areas: lights; motor systems; and the refrigeration of foods and rooms. Converting to the best technology available today could save 80 to 90% of the electricity used for lighting. Electronic adjustable-speed drives in motors can reduce electricity waste.
