Monolayers of stearic acid were studied by surface pressure, surface potential, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectral techniques in the presence of an ammonium nitrate solution substrate. The study was carried out at an air/water interface and the concentration of ammonium nitrate was varied from 0 to 50% in the aqueous phase. The ionic strength of the subphase seems to have a strong influence on the compression behavior of the monolayer film. FTIR studies on the monolayer films indicated the association of ammonium nitrate with the polar head to form a hydrogen bonded network at the interface.
