FURTHER EVIDENCE FOR THE EXISTENCE OF 2 KINDS OF H-BONDS IN ICE IH - COMMENTS

The evidence for the presence of two type of H-bondings in ice recently proposed by Li et al. [Phys. Lett. A 192 (1994) 295; Nature 365 (1993) 327] is critically examined. We demonstrate that these ''new'' observations can be explained adequately by existing experimental data and theoretical results without the need to invoke two widely different hydrogen bond strengths. The vibrational density of states for H2O doped D2O is, in fact, consistent with earlier well-known spectroscopic data. Contrary to the claim by the authors, the two peak pattern in the translational vibrational density of states and the corresponding Raman spectra have been successfully reproduced by carefully parameterized intermolecular potentials that include long range electrostatic interactions.
