ANODIC-OXIDATION OF SULFIDE IONS IN MOLTEN LITHIUM-FLUORIDE

Cyclic voltammetry experiments have been performed on lithium sulfide in a lithium fluoride electrolyte at 1161 K using a graphite working electrode and a platinum quasi-reference electrode. Two distinct oxidation mechanisms are observed for the sulfide ions. The first oxidation produces sulfur and at a higher potential a disulfide species is proposed to have formed. Both oxidations appear to be reversible and diffusion controlled.
