PREPARATION OF ALUMINA FIBERS BY PRECURSOR METHOD - FIBERS FROM AL-AL(NO3)3-CITRIC ACID-SOLUTIONS

Alumina fibers were prepared by precursor method on the system Al metal-Al(NO3)3-Citric acid at room temperature. A spinnable composition range in this system was determined to be 50/1 less-than-or-similar-to H2O mol/total Al mol, 1/1 less-than-or-similar-to metal Al mol/Al(NO3)3 mol less-than-or-similar-to 2/1 and Citric acid mol/total Al mol = 1/10. It was found that in the spinnable solution [Al(H2O)6]3+, Al-dimer and Al containing polymers were formed. However, the spinnable solution was not obtained from the system which was free from citric acid.
