A PZT actuator is made of small particles synthesized by an alkoxide method. The small particles are calcined at 600-degrees-C for 5 h. The calcined powders are cold-pressed under 3 x 10(7) kg/m2. The pressed bodies are sintered in air for 3 h at a temperature between 600-degrees-C to 1100-degrees-C. The grain size is estimated to be around 1-mu-m by SEM observations. The hysteresis in the piezoelectric strain is about 1%, which is much smaller than that in an actuator of the same composition prepared by a conventional mixed oxide method and a conventional sintering technique, typically about 10%. Pinning effects of the ferroelectric domain by the grain boundaries and the reduction of 90-degrees domains due to the decrease of the grain size explain the low hysteresis.
