MICROWAVE-INDUCED CHEMISTRY AT FUNCTIONALIZED POLYETHYLENE SURFACES

摘要
Annealing in a microwave oven can reconstruct a sulfonated polyethylene surface to form a more hydrophilic surface faster than simple heating in vacuo. The accessibility of sulfonic acid groups to a soluble dye, p-methyl red, is unchanged in microwave annealing, while this value decreases in thermal annealing (70-degrees-C) in vacuo. The use of microwave irradiation to accelerate surface carbonyl reactions like esterification is also described.
