TRANSMISSION PROBABILITY OF A DRUM CHOPPER IN A THERMAL-NEUTRON BEAM

Drum choppers have been placed in the incident beams of the pulsed source instruments at IPNS (Intense Pulsed Neutron Source) in order to reduce the background resulting from delayed neutrons from the booster target. Expressions are derived for the detailed pulse shape of the transmitted neutrons and for the duration of the chopper pulse. The transmission probability depends on the neutron wavelength, the frequency of rotation of the chopper, the chopper diameter and slot width, and the incident neutron beam width. These expressions are used to compute the transmission probabilities of time-of-flight diffractometers on pulsed neutron sources which employ drum choppers. They can also be used to determine the time and wavelength dependence of the counting rates for both prompt and delayed neutrons.
