摘要
Contact between the two seal rings of a mechanical face seal was monitored using a unique contact probe. It was found that several discrete patches of solid-to-solid contact exist at the contact interface, whether the seal is run dry or with a sealed liquid. Seal profiles were determined using a computer-aided profilometry system before and after seal operation. Comparison between the surface profiles and the contact measurements showed that the contact patches occur at the waviness peaks on the harder and stiffer of the two rings.
