The electronic structure of C60 is discussed. Within an ideal sphere, the pi-electrons of the neutral ground state might only incompletely fill the h shell. Therefore, a closed-shell ground state is formed, which causes a bond alternation of the hexagons. To obtain the closed-shell ground state, the icosahedral symmetry of the actual molecule does not need to be disturbed. When electrons are added, they strongly counteract this distortion. Such an effect can be seen as an anomalous electron-lattice coupling not present in planar graphite.
