Formation of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons with relatively high yields has been achieved during the passage of low molecular weight olefins (ethylene, propylene) through low-temperature ionic melts. Three ionic melts were investigated: AlCl3/ButPyrCl, AlCl3/PyrHCl, and AlCl3/ImCl. The main products of ethylene and propylene oligomerization were C3-C6 hydrocarbons. Formation of higher products (C>6) was observed after prolonged operation. A tentative correlation between the acidic properties of the melts and their catalytic efficiency toward olefins oligomerization is proposed.
