THE EFFECTIVE INTERACTION IN THE P-SHELL

Using tQ-box techniques linked expansions in terms of number of folds are carried out for all states of the mass 4-7 and 14-16 nuclei, where the complete (0 + 2) h{stroke}ω space is considered. These expansions are shown to converge quickly. However, a similar expansion for the J = 0, T = 0 state of 8Be is found to diverge due to the presence of "intruder states". The derived interaction is tested in shell-model calculations of the A = 5-15 nuclei and it is found that the effective three-body interaction has a strong influence in improving agreement with experiment. © 1990.
