THE HARD TETRAHEDRON FLUID - A MODEL FOR THE STRUCTURE OF WATER

摘要
The structure and thermodynamic properties of a fluid of regular hard tetrahedrons are studied by Monte Carlo simulations in an NPT ensemble. Hard tetrahedrons exhibit an extreme non-sphericity and their specific way of packing gives rise to a structure which has several features in common with the structure of water. It is shown that pentagonal formations of tetrahedrons from 'self-replicating structures' in the sense that was used by Speedy, R. J. (1984, J. phys. Chem., 88, 3364) to explain the properties of hydrogen-bonded water molecules.
