摘要
The paper determines the detailed characteristics of the stable and well-defined pattern of transverse magnetic disturbances in the polar regions that persist during periods of strongly positive interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) B//z. These disturbances also reveal the presence of the Region 1 and Region 2 Birkeland currents that are significantly lower in intensity than this new polar region system. The most intense currents are poleward of, and oppositely directed to, the Region 1 Birkeland currents and extend to the highest latitudes observed. This new current system appears to intensify during strongly northward IMF and there appears to be a clear asymmetry in the spatial patterns associated with the IMF B//y component.
