DIFFUSION AND REACTION IN HIGH-OCCUPANCY ZEOLITE CATALYSTS .2. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS

The equilibrium sorption and uptake diffusion of C6C8 alkylbenzenes in HZSM-5-catalysts are studied between 23 and 128°C, using a high-sensitivity vacuum electrobalance. At room temperature, sorption of benzene, toluene and p-xylene exhibits hysteresis, indicating a phase change. At high temperatures ( > 68°C), sorption is reversible up to 0.1 of saturation pressure. The uptake diffusivity (Du) increases by a factor of 30 with occupancy up to ∼ 4 molecules/unit cell. The counterdiffusion rate of the binary benzene-toluene system, on the other hand, decreases sharply with occupancy. The occupancy dependence of Du for the single-component sorption, and the counterdiffusion behavior of the benzene-toluene system are in qualitative agreement with the predictions of the stochastic theory of Part I. © 1990.
