In order to evaluate the mass transfer coefficient between liquid and supercritical phases in counter-current flow, we have studied the extraction of ethanol from an aqueous solution by supercritical carbon dioxide, as the equilibrium data are relatively well known. Extensive mass transfer results at a pressure of 10 MPa and a temperature of 313 K are obtained in our pilot plant equipped with a 1.4 m high, 54 mm i.d. column packed with stainless steel BX 64 Sulzer packing. From these results, we calculate the extraction efficiency in terms of height equivalent to a theoretical stage (HETS: 0.5 to 1 m) and the overall mass transfer coefficient (k(G)a = 4 x 10(-3) to 12 x 10(-3) sec-1) on the basis of (1) a two-film mass transfer description, and (2) an equation-of-state derived from the Redlich-Kwong-Soave equation proposed by Schwartzenruber and Renon.1
