An extremely regular stacking of closely packed small-sized (diameter 6.9 nm) iron-oxide particles with a narrow size distribution has been observed and studied with the transmission electron microscope (TEM). Phase (or Fresnel) contrast. image simulation, electron diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was used to reveal the close-packed structure, and to determine the thickness of the stacking which generally consisted of 1-12 layers.
