We consider the case of a generic signal understanding system (SUS) and define it as one that extracts information that is 'meaningful' (in an informal sense) to humans. The extraction of information may involve a single level of analysis; e.g. detection via template matching; or a hierarchy of several levels; e.g. speech understanding. (~) At each level of analysis the signal is transformed by a mapping that 'preserves' and 'structures' information but reduces the space required to store it.
