摘要
The mountain escarpment between Makkah (Mecca) and Taif in Saudi Arabia is wooded, scenic, and relatively undisturbed. Two species of juniper, Palaearctic and Afrotropical, overlap there for thirty kilometers. Extensive development is proposed for the region. In 1991 the National Commission for Wildlife Conservation and Development sponsored a university student-staff study of an area of 600 km(2). This paper gives the results of their survey with recommendations for protection of the natural vegetation, the establishment of a nature reserve with related recreational facilities, and for sustainable development.
