Influence of concentration, flow rate and current density on the anodic trifluoromethylation of olefins in trifluoroacetic acid were examined in a flow cell. Increases in the concentration of olefins resulted in significant increases in current efficiencies for the corresponding trifluoromethylated products, while the flow rate of electrolytic solutions did not affect the efficiencies. Maxima of the efficiencies were observed at certain current densities. The reaction seemed to proceed via addition of .CF3 anodically-generated from trifluoroacetic acid to the olefins in the bulk solutions. Maximum yields and efficiencies for the desired products were not lower than those obtained in a batch cell under preliminarily optimized conditions.
