摘要
Population in Amazonia is predominantly urban, despite massive governmental investment in rural development. Growth is now most rapid on the inland settlement frontiers, where boom towns attract a migrant work force intermittently employed in mining, logging, deforestation, ranching, and farming. A geographical analysis of towns in southeastern Para indicates that demographic flux accompanies unstable patterns of resource extraction. Long-term viability of frontier urbanization depends on sustainable processes of production to support the nascent urban system. -Author
