Along the coast of southern Chile, Macrocystis pyrifera occurs principally in subtidal sites, however, intertidal populations are common. In this paper we report a study of the dynamics of an intertidal population of M. pyrifera in Mehuin Bay, Chile, over a period of one year. Strong fluctuations and high mortality of the fronds were observed. It appears that the plants can survive for up to two years. Growth shows seasonal variations and the loss of tissue in the autumn and winter is a significant factor. The annual growth rate was less than that reported for subtidal populations at other latitudes. The highest percentage of fertile individuals was found in summer but the greatest recruitment of new plants was in the spring. The occurence of intertidal populations of M. pyrifera in this region may be possible because of the moderate environmental conditions in southern Chile. Copyright © 1990 Walter de Gruyter
