摘要
As a step towards modelling the tribological behaviour of rough surfaces in sliding contact, the interaction, between two cylindrical elastic-plastic asperities has been analyzed. For a given initial interference the plastically deformed profiles and load cycles in repeated sliding have been calculated on the hypothesis that, in the steady state, the contact pressure is at the shakedown limit for the material and frictional conditions. Two cases have been analyzed: (a) asperities of equal hardness and (b) one asperity very much harder than the other so that it does not deform plastically. Simple experiments have provided good support for the theoretical predictions. The results of the analysis provide the necessary data for predicting, (a) how the distribution of asperity heights and curvatures of a random rough surface will be modified by running in, and (b) the steady-state stress cycles which lead to wear and fatigue of the surfaces.
