FOURIER-TRANSFORM INFRARED STUDY OF HYDROGEN-BONDING BETWEEN AN OH-DONOR AND A VICINAL OXYGEN ACCEPTOR

摘要
The presence of conformers in secondary vicinal diols and some of their mono-methyl-ethers in dilute CCl4 and CS2 solution has been investigated by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The compounds are present mainly in an intramolecular hydrogen-bonded form, with the OH stretching vibration of the donor depending on the type of acceptor (hydroxy or methoxy) and its frequency decreasing on shielding. When the OH group acts as an acceptor, then a particular rotamer is preferred, and the frequency of the stretching vibration is increased with respect to the comparable rotamer in monohydroxy alcohols. © 1990.
