Thermogravimetric data on the synthesis of YBa2Cu3O7 delta below 800-degrees-C under reduced pressure are presented. It is demonstrated that the reaction pathway and rate are determined by the CO2, O2, and total pressure in the reaction vessel. The importance of these variables to the impurties generated during the synthesis is discussed.
