WEAR-RESISTANCE DETERMINATION OF COATINGS FROM CROSS-SECTION MEASUREMENTS OF BALL-GROUND CRATERS

A method is presented to assess the wear resistance of thin coatings by measurement of the cross-section of craters, ground for different times on a standard ball cratering instrument. Standard theory is applied to the particular geometry of a rotating ball on a flat surface in order to evaluate the sliding distance and thus the wear constant in terms of the load, wear time, rotational frequency of the ball and the cross-section of the wear crater. The applicability of the method is evaluated by comparison between theory and experiment for a thin TiN coating on tool steel exposed to wear from a tool steel ball. The results show good agreement between theory and experiment for wear scar depths in excess of about 1.5 mum.
