摘要
Mechanistic studies on autoxidation and the antioxidant action of stabilisers have contributed to the bridging of the gap between the empirical approaches of early technologists and the modern scientifically-oriented entrepreneurs of the highly competitive polymer industry. Over the past twenty-five years the study of the scientific basis of antioxidant action of additives in liquid hydrocarbons and in polymers has been actively pursued at Aston. The basic free radical mechanisms which are responsible for rancidity of oils, deterioration of foodstuffs and ageing of biological systems are also operative in the process of polymer oxidation. Experience gained in this area was cross-fertilised with other emerging technologies which were fuelled by the increased public awareness and socioeconomic issues and demands. Thus, the application of mechanistic knowledge of antioxidant action to address some of the problems of green issues and health hazards are exemplified in the discussion of time-controlled stabilisation, bound antioxidants and polymer modification by reactive processing.
