High-density wavelength division multiplexing (HDWDM) may prove to be an attractive networking technique in future telecommunications networks. However, as in any multichannel transmission system operating over the same transmission medium, a thorough understanding of the effects of crosstalk is required. In this paper we present an analysis of crosstalk in multichannel WDM systems, deriving new expressions for system degradations, taking into account both receiver design and the practical limitations of regenerator electronics. From this study we determine the optimum multiplexer design to give acceptable transmission performance. © 1990 IEEE
